Hello World of Bloggers,
Yes, its me—not a devil but a little devilish at times. And yes, you guessed it: this is yet another fashion blog. Hopefully, my site will not only tell you what’s hot and what’s not, what to wear and what not to wear, but also will inspire you. From excerpts about the fashion industry to quotes from designers and pictures, I hope this blog will inspire you in the sense of broadening your fashion horizons.
It’s important to remember that fashion is not only about couture and fashion week in Milan. Fashion can be found on the street corners and in your own back yard. Fashion trends are often carbon copies of trends discovered on the runway but are also trends because of subcultures that dress and act a certain way. FYI that’s how the whole gothic phase become trendy.
Designers, like Oscar, and fashion gurus, like Ana Wintour, really are trend setters and create visions that last forever but it’s the people and consumer market that are their muses for these visions and are their greatest influencers.
To me, the word fashion can be used in creative ways. I used the word as a noun, adjective, verb, and even adverb. Even though typically fashion is associated with style of garment on a man or woman, I believe that this idea has morphed dramatically in the past decade. The fashion of a building, architecture, and foods are now relevant. It is not only about clothes anymo. Not only is the word fashion diverse in its meaning and usage but also in fashion’s representation. Ya know what I am sayin?
Fashion should not only be recognized on the runway and at red carpet events but also by what is worn when no one is paying attention and the cameras are not flashing flashing (can you see the lights?). Notorious designer Alexander Wang said the following quote:
"Anyone can get all dressed up and glamorous, but it is how people dress in their off days, that are the most intriguing."
It just beautiful, dontcha think? This quote gives you somethin to think about. Alexander Wang is not only a designer but an innovator. He pushes the boundaries of the norm in fashion and his designs and clothing are meant for the ‘off days.’ I think the off days really show one who they really are. Personally, I am a sweat pants gal while my bestie would never be caught dead in sweatpants. Well, since you don’t know Brittany Thompson, let’s take a look at people you do know or at least people you act like you are best friends with. Don’t act like you don’t know what I am talking about.
The following pictures are of Kate Moss on the runway.

The following pictures are of Kate Moss off the runway.

In this scenario, Kate proves Alexander Wang wrong. The pictures don’t look too different besides the dramatic makeup and runway. In one she has a runway and in the other the streets is her runway. She proves to still be glamorous and dressed up on her off days. This shows that Kate’s runway identity may in fact be equivalent to her real identity. However this scenario is not usually the norm. We all know who I am going to bring up now. Britney Spears. Yuh huh I am bringing her into this.—No fashion blog can be complete without her. So here we go. We all know that girl is tragic off the runway and that she is fact just a plain old Louisiana girl who doesn’t want to wear shoes. I will spare you pictures of her oooops doing it over and over again moments.
I can’t help but wonder (think Carrie Bradshaw here!) how long will the fashion industry even hold our interest and continue to be relevant?
That’s all.
Hola-
I am back in hopes of getting my all-things-related-to-fashion blog up and running. I typically peruse a diverse number of sites daily. From hard news to infotainment to food-I’m there. Bollywood to Hollywood, television, celebrities, friends, the homeless that live outside my apartment, and the FOBs are my inspiration! Whoever says fashion is dictated by the rich is famous is full of shit!
Fashion bloggers really are very unique. Some ramble on in uninteresting rants, while others simply post inspirational photos and quotes and leave it with a couple words. Sometimes less is more. Ya heard, cocoperez? Anyways, I am really taking a liking to Rumi Neely’s fashiontoast blog. She is a blogger on blogspot.com too! Check her out at www.fashiontoast.com
She is obviously super into herself. At first I was confused why the “model” in the picture was the same girl in every post. But then I quickly realized that the “model” was in fact the blogger. There is no way that I will be subjecting my readers to pictures of me in every post. EW GAG! Get over yourself. Unfortunately, I found myself addicted to her posts because of her fabulous material possessions-dresses, sunglasses, rings, purses, tights. AHHHH I want them all. But I really didn’t want to like her because it is annoying because you know that she knows that she thinks she’s hot—read it again it makes sense? She is like the quintessential SoCal gal that has an effortlessly chic look but in reality took a good couple hours to throw her rags on. So not Mary-Kate style.
Her name in fact is interesting in itself: Rumi. I don’t know if you know but Rumi was a Persian poet and Sufi mystic. He was man of many words and devoted his life to reaching God and returning to Him through dance, music, and poetry. His words are beautiful. I’ll leave you with my friend Roz’s favorite quote she has tattooed on her wrist:
"Reason is powerless in the expression of Love. Love alone is capable of revealing the truth of Love and being a Lover. If you want to live, die in Love; die in Love if you want to remain alive."
Ok back to the blogger, Rumi. Rumi, is half Japanese and half white. She is definitely no mystic and she has no authority on fashion. She is just a gal that models for RVCA and blogs whatever she is thinking and feels. She is always thinking and feeling something about fashion. I enjoy the brevity of her posts and the copious amounts of pictures. Some of the pictures are definitely not for mama. Rumi is not a scholar or academic but somehow establishes herself as an authoritative figure in her brief commentary or description. Even her list of things she did a particular day sound so glamorous and fashionable. Here check it out: http://www.fashiontoast.com/search?updated-max=2010-02-04T13%3A05%3A00-08%3A00&max-results=6
She clearly has a group of followers because she even has ad space from American Apparel in the margins. But I am sure that she has to be photoged (it’s a word—just sound it out!) in an AA tee every two entries! But on the other hand, she really adds an element of her personal life in every entry. With references to her designer friend Kristin and her boyfiend Colin and even to decisions to make about trips to New York and Japan, her readers are really well-versed on her life in fashion and outside of it. Don’t believe me? Look how detailed she is in this entry--http://www.fashiontoast.com/
I think I am going to choose a route that leaves you a littttle more in the dark. Perhaps name drop here and there, but I am sure you can figure it out! Tee hee! But I do plan on mimicking her manner of intertwining my everyday life with fashion! I’ll just have to wait and see if ya like it!
That’s all.
Hola mi mundito (“Hi my little world”-because I know I prolly have like 2 readers):
As I work to establish my blog, I have looked to other bloggers out here as inspiration. Frenchtoast is a blog I recently profiled but not one I admire in terms of being my favorite voice. In particular, I like the way some bloggers are able to convey their identity and voice or the person they want to be through their blog. Like I think my voice that I am trying to establish on Devilish in the City is conversational, fun, friendly, colloquial, very internet-friendly in terms of the younger generations being able to identify with my jargon but not so much the older peeps. I hope that I am accomplishing that if not feel free to holla at me.
Anyways, for a couple years now I have really admired the voice behind The Superficial. The voice is raw, real, honest, and everything society wants to say but cannot, because it is either racist or politically incorrect. Even though this blog is not strictly a fashion industry blog, the entries often focus on facets of the industry that are instrumental and key components to the industry that has evolved over time, including body image, celebrities, scandal, drugs, etc.
His voice (wait, I don’t even know if the blogger is a guy or girl but I have imagined the voice to definitely be an LA youngish man that is slim and douchey. Ok, I know this may not make sense to you but this image is burnt in my mind) is consistent in every single entry and it amazes me that he never changes his tone and insensitive tone in each and every entry. It is crazay! And I am sooo jealous.
For example, on Feb 1 just yesterday, The Superficial posted this as their entry for the day.
http://thesuperficial.com/page.php?p=15
In case you are too lazy to click on the link, the entry is commenting on Rihanna’s outfit she wore to the Grammys. She is wearing an avante garde dress that is very fashion forward. The Superficial says:
Here's Rihanna at the Pre-Grammy Gala Saturday night which is the same event she attended last year right before Chris Brown beat the ever-living fuck out of her for peeping his texts from another woman. It's also why I'm 98% positive her outfit acts as a defensive shield thus providing Rihanna a much-needed sense of security. Otherwise, there's no other explanation here besides the 80s showing up to finish the job Chris Brown started. Holy shit, they've got Aqua Net! Shields.
He titles the entry as, “Rihanna isn’t taking any chances.” Firstly, everyone knows that Rihanna was physically abused by her then bf-beau Chris Brown and was able to single handedly throw off the entire Grammy Awards and performance schedule last year. Even though it has been 365 days, it is still a subject that is taboo and if it is mentioned it is mentioned delicately. But of course the Superficial has a blunt approach and blatantly exposes what happened with vulgar language and without sensitivity. This single blog posts captures the voice I described him to have—honest, raw, not pc, and everything we were thinking but would never say aloud.
He writes in full sentences but they may as well be fragments with his cursing, use of contractions, and his overly comfortable conversational style. “fuck” and “shit” are words that evoke strong feeling and emotion. Also the word “peeping” is an interesting choice of words and shows his use of onomatopoeia. The word itself is associated with its own rhetorical effect-kind of. Peeping at a text instead of looking at text implies that Rihanna was being shady and you can almost imagine her carefully snagging a peek or peep at his texts. Furthermore, he compares her dress to a shield as a defensive prop from any other further abuse. This metaphor is an example of how he makes fun of Rihanna’s fashion choice as well as her abusive situation that she was involved in. Through his sentence style, figures of speech, and word choices, The Superficial’s voice is revealed.
Here’s another epic post from The Superficial.
http://thesuperficial.com/page.php?p=20
He posts a picture of fashion designer, Donatella Versace, wrinkled, orange, and topless on the beach. The entry is entitled, “I will never get an erection again.” It is hilarious because every reader is obviously thinking “EW!” But only The Superficial will be specific about his feelings and give it this title. He further goes on to elaborate in his post:
Here's a topless Donatella Versace in St. Barth's yesterday and I don't know how the hell the paparazzi knew this was her let alone a live human being. Seriously, it looks like someone pulled Pamela Anderson out of the sun's core then told her sunscreen would help. "No, really, it doesn't look that bad. Coppertone?"
UPDATE: Turns out this isn't Donatella Versace, but an Italian countess often mistaken for her by the paparazzi, according to Gawker. I don't want to alarm anybody, but this means there's now TWO Bacon Monster with Implants out there. I'll be under my bed.
He continues to curse in his post to show his disgust and even inserts commentary to continue the mockery. His use of contractions remains to maintain his casual and conversational voice. He compares her to Pamela Anderson, who has a constant presence on the blog (and trust me that ain’t a good thing).
The Superficial is quite provocative and open but it is real and raw. I love his voice and tone in the blog. It is not my voice of choice, but I definitely appreciate it.
That’s all.

Rumi on my Mind
I am back in hopes of getting my all-things-related-to-fashion blog up and running. I typically peruse a diverse number of sites daily. From hard news to infotainment to food-I’m there.
She clearly has a group of followers because she even has ad space from American Apparel in the margins. But I am sure that she has to be photoged (it’s a word—just sound it out!) in an AA tee every two entries! But on the other hand, she really adds an element of her personal life in every entry. Don’t believe me? Look how detailed she is in this entry--http://www.fashiontoast.com/

hello world
Hello World of Bloggers,
Yes, its me—not a devil but a little devilish at times.
That’s all.
